Nestled in the Tintic Mountains about 75 miles southwest of Salt Lake City, Eureka, Utah was once one of the richest mining towns in the American West. 

During the late 1800s, thousands of miners came here searching for silver, gold, lead, copper, and zinc. At its peak, Eureka was one of Utah's wealthiest communities, complete with banks, hotels, churches, opera houses, electric lights, and a railroad. 

Today, many of those historic buildings still stand, making Eureka one of the best-preserved mining towns in Utah.

Why Scores of Classic Cars Come to a Town of 200 People | Wilson Creek, Washington #WilsonCreek

 

 

Today we're visiting Wilson Creek, Washington, a small farming town with a population of just over 200 people. But once each year, hundreds of classic cars roll into town for The Little Big Show, transforming quiet streets into one of the busiest destinations in Grant County. 

To understand why this event has become such a success, we have to understand the history of Wilson Creek itself.  

Founded during the settlement of eastern Washington in the 1880s, Wilson Creek grew rapidly after the arrival of the railroad in 1892. By the time Grant County was created in 1909, Wilson Creek was the county's largest town and an important center of commerce, agriculture, and banking.

In this video, we'll explore the history of Wilson Creek, the role of the Wilson Creek State Bank, the rise of dryland wheat farming, and how changing transportation routes transformed the community. We'll also take a look at The Little Big Show and discover why this tiny town still attracts visitors from across the Pacific Northwest.

Walking Through Harrington, Washington | History, Trains & Small-Town America #HarringtonWashington

 

 

Today we're exploring Harrington, Washington, a small town in Lincoln County with deep railroad roots, a rich agricultural heritage, and some of the best-preserved historic buildings in Eastern Washington.

Founded in the 1880s and named after California banker W.P. Harrington, the town grew rapidly with the arrival of the railroad. By 1910, Harrington had become an important shipping center for wheat, livestock, and supplies throughout the Big Bend region.

In this walking tour, we'll explore the historic downtown, visit the famous Harrington Bank Block and Opera House, take a look at the Lincoln Hotel and Electric Hotel, learn about the town's connection to the National UFO Reporting Center, and do a little train spotting along the way.

Back in October 2024, I visited Temple Square in Salt Lake City while the historic Salt Lake Temple remained hidden behind fences, scaffolding, and cranes. Nearly two years later, I returned to see how much progress has been made on one of the largest religious restoration projects in American history.

In this update, we walk around Temple Square and take a look at the Salt Lake Temple renovation as it enters its final stages. Along the way we'll explore the Tabernacle, Conference Center, Church History Museum, FamilySearch Library, and other landmarks that make this area one of the most visited destinations in Utah.

We'll also venture beyond Temple Square to visit Memory Grove Park, City Creek Canyon, the Utah State Capitol grounds, City Creek Center, and other attractions within walking distance of downtown Salt Lake City.

Located next to Hill Air Force Base in northern Utah, the Hill Aerospace Museum is home to one of the most impressive collections of military aircraft in the western United States. Best of all, admission is completely free.

In this video, we explore more than a century of aviation history, from the earliest days of powered flight through World War II, the Cold War, and the modern stealth era. Along the way we'll see legendary aircraft including the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, B-29 Superfortress, F-4 Phantom, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, and the Lockheed F-117 Nighthawk stealth fighter.

One of the museum's biggest attractions is the Lockheed SR-71C Blackbird. The aircraft displayed at Hill Aerospace Museum is the only SR-71C ever built and the final Blackbird manufactured. Originally developed during the Cold War for high-altitude reconnaissance missions, the SR-71 remains one of the fastest aircraft ever flown.

The museum itself traces its origins to 1981 and has grown into one of Utah's premier aviation attractions. Today visitors can explore three galleries and an outdoor air park containing more than 70 historic aircraft and aerospace artifacts.

Coulee City, Washington: More Than Just a Stop Along Highway 2 #CouleeCity #WashingtonState

 

 

Coulee City, Washington is a place I've driven through many times, but on this trip I finally stopped to explore it on foot. What I found was a vibrant small town filled with local businesses, public art, friendly people, and a surprising amount of activity during Memorial Day Weekend. 

In this video we walk through downtown Coulee City, visit local shops and galleries, and learn about the town's history. Founded as McEntee's Crossing in the 1880s, Coulee City grew into an important railroad and agricultural center serving the surrounding wheat country. The arrival of the railroad connected the town to larger markets and helped establish it as a regional hub. 

We'll also explore how the Columbia Basin Project transformed the region, bringing irrigation water from the Columbia River through Banks Lake and into central Washington. Along the way, we'll discuss Dry Falls, one of the most spectacular geological features in North America, created by the massive Ice Age floods that carved the Grand Coulee thousands of years ago. 

What surprised me most wasn't the history—it was how alive the town felt. Between the rodeo, campground, local businesses, art galleries, and community spirit, Coulee City proved to be much more than just another small town along Highway 2. 

 If you're traveling through Eastern Washington, Coulee City is worth more than a quick drive-through.

Welcome to Almira Washington! Today we're taking a drive into one of Eastern Washington's small prairie towns to see what stories still remain. From Pinky's Vintage Flea Market and Almira's nearly vanished downtown, to the century-old Hotel Almira and the town's agricultural and railroad history, this little community has far more history than you might expect.

We'll explore the places that helped build Almira, learn how wheat farming shaped the economy, discover how the railroad transformed life here, and take a look at the role Almira played in the changing history of the Columbia Basin.
